Grover Rees III

Grover Joseph Rees III (born October 11, 1951 in New Orleans , Louisiana , United States ) is an American diplomat and local politician.

Career

Rees graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree and in 1978 from Louisiana State University .

In 1973 Rees worked for Rep. David C. Treen and from 1978 to 1979 he was Legal Secretary to Albert Tate on the Supreme Court of Louisiana. At the University of Texas he was Assistant Professor of Law from 1979 to 1986. This was followed by a post as US Official Chief Justice at the High Court of American Samoa until 1991 and as US Official General Counsel at the Immigration and Naturalization Service until 1993 . Other positions were US Official Staff Director & Chief Counsel to the Subcommittee on International Operations & Human Rights (1995–2001) and US Official Counsel to the Committee on International Relations, House of Representatives (2001–2002).

Rees was appointed the first US ambassador to East Timor on November 15, 2002 by US President George W. Bush . He gave his accreditation to East Timor's President Xanana Gusmão on December 10, 2002 . Shari Villarosa had previously served as Chargé d'Affaires in Dili . Rees remained as Ambassador to East Timor until September 29, 2006 . In 2004 he helped with the Bush and Dick Cheney election campaigns .

At the United States Department of State , he was 2006-2009 Special Representative for Social Issues . In January 2009, Rees retired. From 2010 to 2013 he worked for the George W. Bush Foundation .

In 2016, Rees ran for the Louisiana Third Congressional District .

The Acadian ancestors of Rees settled in the Attakapas / Saint Martin region in the 18th century .

He was born the first child of Grover Rees II and Patricia Byrne. Eight brothers and three sisters followed. Grover Rees III is married to Lan Dai Nguyen Rees for the second time. He has a son.

In addition to English, Rees speaks French, Spanish, Portuguese, Samoan and Tetum .
