Gruia is a municipality in Mehedinți County in southwestern Romania .
Geographical location
The municipality extends in the south of the district, on the left bank of the Danube , south of the Mehedinți Mountains . On the opposite side is the Serbian municipality of Radujevac . Located on the national road Drum național 56C , the village of Gruia in the east is surrounded by wide grain fields of the Little Wallachia .
history
In the surroundings of Gruia - called La Carieră by the locals - there are several sites of Roman relics that go back to Roman settlements in what was then the province of Dacia . However, the history of settlement in the region goes back much further. In the area of the place Izvoarele finds that point to the Bronze Age have been made.
When Romania joined the EU in 2007 , Gruia became a border town of the European Union and has been under strict customs surveillance ever since. Nevertheless, smuggling of illegal goods from Serbia across the Danube is widespread.
economy
Gruia lives from trade and shipping on the Danube. Another part of the population works in agriculture.
Investors are mainly attracted by inland shipping and should bring the community into line with Western European standards in the future. The construction projects include, for example, the expansion of the water supply and the modernization of the sewerage system.
Tourism is only slightly developed and is limited to the old Danube port, the archaeological sites and the SC COMEXIM guesthouse .
