Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson [ ˈkvʏðnɪ ˈjouhanɛsˌsɔn ] (German transcription Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson ; born June 26, 1968 in Reykjavík ), usually abbreviated Guðni Th. Jóhannesson , is an Icelandic historian and politician . He won the presidential election on June 25, 2016 as an independent candidate and has been the incumbent President of Iceland since August 1, 2016, succeeding Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson .

life and work

Guðni was born in Reykjavík as the son of the teacher and journalist Margrét Thorlacius and the sports teacher Jóhannes Sæmundsson . He studied at the University of Warwick , the University of Bonn , the University of Iceland and the University of Oxford . In 2003 he received a Ph.D. from Queen Mary, University of London. awarded in history.

Guðni Th.Jóhannesson has worked as a professor at the University of Iceland, the University of Bifröst and the University of London . Before being elected President, he was a senior lecturer at the University of Iceland. His research area is the modern history of Iceland , on which he has published several studies, including the cod wars , Iceland's financial crisis 2008–2011 and the history of the Icelandic presidency . He is the author of a biography of the politician Gunnar Thoroddsen and a work on the presidency of Kristján Eldjárn , the third president of Iceland. Guðni lived in Seltjarnarnes at the time of his presidential candidacy . He has two brothers: Patrekur Jóhannesson works as a handball trainer, Jóhannes as a systems analyst . Guðni is married to Eliza Reid, a Canadian, with whom he has four children. Another daughter comes from a previous marriage to Gudnis. He was raised Catholic, but left the Roman Catholic Church .
