The Guan Di Temple ( Chinese 關帝廟 / 关帝庙 , Pinyin Guāndì miào ) is the Chinese temple in Dili, the capital of East Timor . It is located in the courtyard on Rua Formosa in Suco Gricenfor , near the government district and the seat of the Archdiocese of Dili . The temple is named after the god of war Guandi ( 關 帝 / 关 帝 , Guāndì ). In Tetum it is also called Cina Maromak .
Appearance
The simple Guandi Temple has white walls and green roof tiles, supported by red columns. Deities from the Three Teachings of China, Confucianism , Daoism and Buddhism are worshiped on the approximately 1000 m² temple area . Next to the main temple for Guandi there is a small shrine for the Boddhisatva Guanyin . In the well-visited temple there are not only believers from the Chinese communities of East Timor but also visitors from the ancestral populations of East Timor and Indonesia .
history
In 1912 there was already a temple for the Chinese population of Portuguese Timor . In 1926 an approximately 30 cm high Buddha statue was brought from China to Dili and initially worshiped in a garage. In 1928, with the approval of the Portuguese colonial government, today's temple was built and the Buddha statue was placed in the center of the new temple. Among the donors for the construction of the temple, who are commemorated with plaques, there are also the names of two Portuguese officers: Lieutenant Manuel M. Oliveira and Lieutenant Enrico Cowa Lemos. The other donors were from the Chinese community. The Chinese government donated US $ 200 annually for the maintenance of the temple until the People's Republic was founded .
The Chinese memorial plaque attached to the main entrance in 1993 reports on the reconstruction of the temple complex in 1936 by Hakka Chinese who immigrated from Macau - excerpt from the inscription: "離鄉 別 井 , 乘風破浪 遠渡重洋 , 栖身 東帝汶 ..." . Due to political unrest, the Guandi Temple was devastated and rebuilt several times over the years (see Japanese occupation in World War II , civil war 1975 , Indonesian occupation , wave of violence in 1999 ).
