Gudrun Penndorf

Gudrun Penndorf (* 1938 ) is a German Romanist and translator . She became known as a translator of the Asterix volumes 1–29, and she also translated numerous Lucky Luke notebooks and almost two hundred funny paperbacks into German.

Gudrun Penndorf completed a French and Italian translation and interpreting training in the fields of business and law in Heidelberg and Munich . Among other things, she worked for Langenscheidt- Verlag and as a court interpreter. At the age of 40 she began to study general and Romance languages ​​and completed her studies with a Magister (MA) . From 1967 to 1993 she worked as a freelance translator. Later she also worked on a project to integrate migrant women .

She got the job to translate Asterix when she was working at Ehapa as a translator for Disney's Funny paperbacks . After Rolf Kauka made the adventures of the Germanic peoples Siggi and Babarra out of the first Asterix volumes , the license contract was withdrawn from him, which was eventually passed on to Ehapa. There Gudrun Penndorf translated the first 29 volumes of the series under the overall direction of Adolf Kabatek . For example, she turned the French “Ils sont fous, ces Romains” into the proverbial “They're crazy, the Romans”. The world judges: “She contributed at least as much to the German success of Asterix and to the enrichment of the German language as the legendary Erika Fuchs to Donald Duck . Gudrun Penndorf works as a lecturer for French and business French at the Institute for Romance Philology at the University of Munich.
