Guido Ascanio Sforza, Conte di Santa Fiora (born November 26, 1518 in Rome , † October 6, 1564 in Mantua ) was a cardinal from the Farnese and Sforza families . He was a grandson of Pope Paul III.

Life

Guido Ascanio Sforza is the son of Bosio II. Sforza , 4th Conte di Santa Fiora, and Costanza Farnese , a daughter of Paul III. At the age of ten he was appointed Bishop of Corneto e Montefiascone . It is not known when he received episcopal ordination .

His grandfather Paul III. accepted him in his first consistory on December 18, 1534 as cardinal deacon of Santi Vito e Modesto in the college of cardinals . The following year he became apostolic administrator of the diocese of Parma , which he remained until 1560. On October 22, 1537 Paul III appointed him. the almost 19-year-olds to the Camerlengo . In the following years Cardinal Sforza was entrusted with legacy activities and the fight against the Ottoman Empire . In 1541 he was administrator of the Patriarchate of Alexandria , in 1542 he carried out the same activity in the diocese of Anglona e Tursi. He also became the protector of Armenia and Spain. In 1548 he laid down the leadership of the diocese Corneto e Montefiascone.

After the death of Pope Paul III. he took part in the conclave , the 1550 Julius III. elected to the Pope. In 1552 he appointed him cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Via Lata . As a cardinal protodeacon, he announced the election of Popes Marcellus II and Paul IV in 1555. The latter had him incarcerated in 1555 because he had sided with Spain. After the conclave in 1559 , Cardinal Sforza announced the election of Pius IV. Five years later he died of fever in the Villa Canedo in Mantua.

Guido Ascanio Sforza was the older brother of Cardinal Alessandro Sforza (1534–1581) appointed in 1565 .
