Count Guido Monzino (born March 2, 1928 in Milan , † October 11, 1988 ) was an Italian mountaineer and researcher. In 1973 he led the first Italian expedition to climb Mount Everest .
Life
Monzino was born in Milan on March 2, 1928. He climbed the Matterhorn in his early twenties . Over the years he has completed 21 expeditions that took him to Patagonia , Equatorial Africa , Greenland , the North Pole and the Himalayas . He also undertook tours that the first famous Italian explorer and mountaineer Luigi Amadeo of Savoy (1873-1933) had undertaken.
Guido Monzino died on October 11, 1988 and was buried on the grounds of Villa del Balbianello on the shores of Lake Como , his last accommodation. His villa now houses a museum that houses artifacts that he has collected, such as Inuit sculptures, but also remains from his expeditions, such as the dog sled of his 1971 North Pole expedition. His collections, maps and books are also exhibited there.
