Gundolf Precht

Gundolf Precht (born December 19, 1937 in Münster ; † November 14, 2015 in Cologne ) was a German building researcher who made a particular contribution to the archeology of the Roman provinces .

Gundolf Precht studied architecture at the Technical University of Aachen . He specialized in antique building research and was in Aachen in 1971 with the work of architectural history study of the Roman Praetorium in Cologne for Doktoringenieur doctorate. His research over the next few decades revolved primarily around the Roman remains in the Rhineland , particularly in Cologne and Xanten . He played a key role in the design of the Xanten Archaeological Park , which he headed as regional building director from 1973 until his retirement in 2002. In addition, he researched a. a. to the tomb of Poblicius , whose reconstruction he directed until the opening of the Roman-Germanic Museum in 1974, and to the Roman baths. Between 2005 and 2013 he was responsible for the reconstruction of three outbuildings of the Roman villa in Reinheim in the European cultural park Bliesbruck-Reinheim .

Volume 12 of the Xantener Reports series was dedicated to Precht as a festschrift . Precht was an advisory member of the Association of State Archaeologists and a member of the Advisory Board of the Archaeological Zone Cologne . In the dispute over the archaeological zone, he emerged as a critic of the research results of the project manager Sven Schütte .

Gundolf Precht died at the age of 77 and was buried on November 25, 2015 in Cologne's Melaten cemetery (lit. B).
