Gunnison is a small town in the US state of Colorado and the administrative seat of Gunnison County . It is located around 200 km southwest of Colorado Springs on the Gunnison River and is the largest housing estate with around 5850 inhabitants on the southern foothills of the West Elk and Elk Mountains within a radius of around 80 km. Economically, the city benefits mainly from the Crested Butte winter sports center and the Black-Canyon-of-the-Gunnison National Park , both of which are within a radius of around 50 km from the city. West of the city, the Gunnison River is dammed up to form the Blue Mesa Reservoir , the largest reservoir in Colorado.
Gunnison has a state university with around 2,400 students: the Western State College of Colorado . The city was named after the explorer John Williams Gunnison .
At the eastern exit of the village is the Gunnison Pioneer Museum with exhibits from the settlement history of the region. Special exhibits include various buildings that have been moved to the museum from abandoned locations in the region, as well as a vehicle exhibition with motor vehicles and narrow-gauge railroad vehicles from the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railways.
In the media
Gunnison is the setting for the science fiction film Aliens vs. Predator 2 , although the film was shot in the cities of Port Coquitlam and Port Moody , British Columbia .
