The Guntersblumer Kellerweg is an approximately 1 kilometer long road in the west of the Rhine-Hessian community of Guntersblum . This street is known to the general public mainly because of the annual Kellerweg Festival . Due to its architectural and historical importance, the Guntersblumer Kellerweg is designated as a monument zone .

architecture

The Guntersblumer Kellerweg stretches in the west of the village for about one kilometer under the immediately adjacent vineyards . The Guntersblumer Kellerweg consists of two main parts. One part runs in the southern part from Guntersblum to the historic Julianenbrunnen , the northern part runs from the Julianenbrunnen to almost the exit of Guntersblum. There is also a spacious dance and event area around the Julianenbrunnen, which is mainly used during the Kellerweg Festival in August each year. There are currently more than a hundred wine cellars in Kellerweg.

history

When in the 16th century the Guntersblum houses in the lower eastern part of Guntersblum were more and more afflicted by the groundwater and floods of the Rhine , it was decided to build the wine cellars in the slightly higher western part of Guntersblum. Today there are more than a hundred such wine cellars. The first wine cellar was built as early as 1600.

Todays use

Where previously only wine cellars were to be found, people slowly began to build normal houses in the 1980s. This is mainly due to a lack of building space within the town. The cellars are also used as wine cellars for their initial purpose.

particularities

  • The accumulation of such wine cellars in such a way is unique in Germany. Such buildings only exist in Austria , here under the name Kellergasse , namely in northeastern Lower Austria ( Weinviertel ) and the adjacent areas in the Czech Republic as well as in Burgenland and the border area in Hungary . The Julianenbrunnen within the Kellerweg is also a specialty due to its age.
  • The Kelterhaus (Kellerweg 20) from the 19th century, an old wing built in the classic Wilhelminian style, with an imposing, wood-paneled and painted wine tasting room from that time, last operated as a restaurant, owned by the municipality since 2000, has been used as a museum since 2003.
  • In 1901, Carl Küstner had a summer studio built in Guntersblumer Kellerweg 53. He spent every summer here before he was last here in 1932, before he died in Munich in 1934 .
  • The ancient Julianenbrunnen is located in the heart of the Guntersblumer Kellerweg . The date carved into the fountain (1608) suggests that it is at least 400 years old.

Kellerwegfest

The so-called Kellerweg Festival has been celebrated in Kellerweg since 1964. The origin of the Kellerwegfest goes back to an initiative of the old mayor Hugo Seibert, who wanted to make the whole place more attractive. The Kellerweg Festival is celebrated every year on the last two weekends in August. It is now the largest wine festival in Rheinhessen (the largest wine-growing region in Germany ), to which numerous visitors come not only from the surrounding area, but also from cities further away (for example: buses from Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg). At the Kellerwegfest, apart from in the Kellerweg, there is also a large square around the Julianenbrunnen, which has been expanded in recent years to a large and spacious dance and event area that now extends to the local Julianenstraße. Every year an orchestra plays on a slightly raised area . The wines are served exclusively in the annually redesigned wine festival glass, which must be purchased and is used to finance the festival.
