Gustav Assmann (architect)

Franz Gustav Assmann (born November 18, 1825 in Frankfurt (Oder) ; † June 3, 1895 in Kassel ) was a German architect , publicist and construction clerk .

career

Gustav Assmann did a surveying apprenticeship and military service in Halle after graduating from high school in 1844 . He passed his surveyor's examination in Gdansk in 1846 and was then employed at the Ostbahn until 1848 , studying at the Berlin Building Academy until the construction manager's examination in 1850 . From 1850 to 1853 he worked again for the Ostbahn and from 1853 to 1857 at the Neues Museum in Berlin. After the master builder examination in 1857, he was briefly employed as a master builder in the government in Danzig. In 1858 he was transferred to the Berlin Police Headquarters. From 1858 to 1862 he was a member of the development plan commission and at times Hobrecht's deputy . In 1862 he became a building inspector. From 1867 to 1872 he was employed by the government in Liegnitz as a government and building officer , and in 1869 he returned to Berlin to the police headquarters.

In 1872 he was transferred to the government in Kassel at his own request, where he was involved in the construction of judicial and government buildings in Kassel, university buildings in Marburg and a powder factory in Hanau . In 1880, as a secret building officer, he became head of the building department in the War Ministry. From September 20, 1880 to April 1, 1889 he was a member of the Academy of Civil Engineering and was promoted to the secret senior building officer in 1886. After retiring in 1888, he returned to Kassel. He was a member of the Architects' Association in Berlin since 1849, in 1857 and from 1861 to 1866 as chairman. In 1880 he became a member of the board.

Gustav Assmann published art-historical publications and stood out primarily through socially critical publications on the housing problem in Berlin.
