The men's 400-meter hurdles at the 1997 World Athletics Championships was held from August 2-4, 1997 in the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, Athens .
World champion was Stéphane Diagana , who was third in the French World Cup in 1995 and third in the European Championship in 1994 . Silver went to the South African Llewellyn Herbert . The American Bryan Bronson came in third place.

The existing world championship record was not set and not improved at these world championships.
The French world champion Stéphane Diagana set a new world best of the year in the final with 47.70 seconds.

doping
There was a doping case in this competition.
The Frenchman Pascal Maran , who was eliminated in the preliminary stages , was convicted of having doped with ephedrine after his race and was disqualified.
Since the doped athlete was eliminated in the first round, there were no particular disadvantages for other athletes.
Preliminary round
The preliminary round was carried out in seven runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the three fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.
