Gustav Belz (2005)

Gustav Georg Belz (born March 25, 1940 in Wiesbaden-Biebrich ) is a German internist , cardiologist and clinical pharmacologist .

Life

After graduating from the Gutenberg School in Wiesbaden in 1960, Belz studied medicine at the universities of Mainz and Frankfurt / M. and received his doctorate in 1968 from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz as Dr. med. He was an assistant and senior physician at clinics in Eppstein , Bad Soden , Frankfurt, Mainz, Ulm and Koblenz. During his training, he was particularly influenced by the cardiologists Jörgen Schmidt-Voigt , Eppstein and Martin Stauch, Ulm. In 1974 he completed his habilitation at the University of Ulm for "Internal Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology" and initially taught there as a private lecturer, and from 1976 as a professor in Mainz . Since 1977 he was the medical director of the together with his wife Gudrun Belz, geb. Pfnorr founded the "Center for Cardiovascular Pharmacology" in Mainz and a private internal cardiological practice in Wiesbaden. In 1983 he was elected a "Fellow" of the American College of Cardiology. In 1993 he was president of the annual congress of the German Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapy. Gustav G. Belz has been a member of the Rotary Club Wiesbaden since 1989 (1995 president, 2005–2006 governor of the Rotary District 1820). In 2005, together with Reinhild Link, he initiated the Rotarian project “heilekids ”, a program against malnutrition and lack of exercise as the causes of obesity and its secondary disorders in children.

Act

1970 First publication of the antihypertensive effect after oral administration of a calcium antagonist in hypertensive patients . It was in the 1968 study, (automatic blood pressure measurements by means of the "Custocor" by Wilhelm Vogel and Thure von Uexküll the later casting) gallopamil named drug still used as test substance 536 = D600 = methoxy-verapamil.

First description of the antiypertensive effect of a calcium channel blocker

He made significant contributions to research into the dose-effect relationships of cardiac glycosides and the demonstration of pharmacodynamic effects at very low doses / blood levels of digoxin and especially digitoxin .

Can effect of digitalis glyosides in humans

[Extensive studies of the interactions (interactions) of digoxin with other drugs, e.g. B. quinidine / verapamil received great international attention. In close cooperation with the pharmacologists Dieter Palm and Anton Wellstein from the University of Frankfurt / M. (with strict observance of ethical restrictions in studies on humans) principles of experimental principles could be introduced into clinical pharmacology (e.g. Schild plot ). Using this method, the duration, quality and strength of the action of various β-blockers , ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists ( AT1 antagonists ) could be characterized comparatively. The effects of various herbal medicinal products such as camphor and crataegus and their combination (Korodin) have also been demonstrated in humans.

The development of methods for clinical cardiovascular pharmacology was another focus of his research activities: For pharmacokinetics, the procedure for determining the blood levels of different cardiac glycosides (digitoxin, digoxin, proscillaridin, etc.) by means of the inhibition of rubidium uptake by erythrocytes. For pharmacodynamics measurement methods for the quantitative detection of cardiovascular drug effects in humans by non-invasive methods, such as Mechanokardiographie, electrical impedance cardiography , in particular "systolic time intervals (STI)". In a much-cited review he made history, physiology and pathophysiology of the air chamber function of the aorta represents. Together with Kerstin Breithaupt Grögler was an extensive study on the effect of addition studies on the physiology of the aorta garlic performed on the elasticity of the aorta.
