Gustav Cohn
Gustav Cohn (born December 12, 1840 in Marienwerder , West Prussia , † September 17, 1919 in Göttingen ) was a German economist.
Life
Gustav Cohn studied history, law and political science in Berlin and Jena . Formative experiences for him at that time were the Prussian constitutional conflict, the appearance of Lassalle and the beginning of the Catholic Socialism . In 1866 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. in Leipzig and attended the statistical seminar in Berlin from 1867–68. In 1869 he qualified as a professor at Heidelberg University for economics . In autumn 1869 he followed a call to the Polytechnic in Riga , where he worked until 1872, most recently as a professor. In 1872 he was one of the founders of the Association for Social Policy . Between 1872 and 1873 Cohn worked as a socio-political editor for the Frankfurter Zeitung . In 1873 he went on a study trip to England, the results of which in the work Investigations on the English railway policy (2 vols., Leipzig 1874-75; vol. 1: The development of railway legislation in England ; vol. 2: To assess the English railway policy ) processed. From 1875 he taught at the Polytechnic in Zurich and from 1884 to 1918 he taught as a full professor of political science at the University of Göttingen .
Since 1892 he was a member of the Reich Commission for the Study of Stock Exchange Studies . In 1893 he was elected a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Cohn devoted himself to the ethical and socio-political direction of economics.
