Gustav Frölich (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gustav Robert Frölich (born March 25, 1858 in Cilli , Austria-Hungary, † March 18, 1933 in Dresden ) was an Austro-German architect and chief building officer active in Saxony . Together with Gustav Dunger (1845–1920), he made a special contribution to the profound neo-renaissance reconstruction of the Dresden residential palace .

Life

Born in Cilli, Styria , Frölich first attended the building trade school in Dresden. From 1878 to 1881 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy , among others with the architect Hermann Nicolai .

After completing his studies, he was employed in the court building department as a court building inspector, where he initially carried out smaller designs under the court architect Gustav Dunger, who was 13 years his senior. The two of them worked together almost on an equal footing in the renovation of the Dresden Royal Palace from 1889. This year marks the 800th anniversary of the tenancy of the House of Wettin with the Mark Meissen , which prompted the state of Saxony to release funds for the palace renovation .

The partly quite simple facades were upgraded with mid-houses , balconies and corner towers. The Georgentor also received all of these structural elements, in which the equestrian statue of Duke George the Bearded by the sculptor Christian Behrens was attached. The castle received a new south wing and a copper-clad connecting bridge to the court church. The latter went back in particular to Frölich, who in the meantime far surpassed Dunger in artistic terms.

Furthermore, Frölich worked mainly for the Saxon royal family and Saxon castles. In 1898 he was appointed court architect, in 1901 court building officer and in 1910 court chief building officer. In 1919 he retired.
