Gustav Greiß

Karl Gustav Greiß (born June 2, 1825 in Frankfurt am Main ; † August 15, 1896 there ) was a German architectural draftsman and architect .

Gustav Greiß first attended the Sunday and trade school of the Polytechnic Society in Frankfurt. From 1839 to 1845 he studied architecture and ornament drawing at the Städel Institute under Friedrich Maximilian Hessemer , and from 1840 to 1845 he completed an apprenticeship as a stonemason with Gottlieb Rust. In 1845/46 he worked under Ernst Friedrich Zwirner at the Cologne Dombauhütte , then in Neuss , Odenthal and Düsseldorf . From 1846 to 1850 he carried out architectural recordings in Werden , Obermarsberg and Essen for Prussian authorities , and made a drawing of the building of Horst Castle for August Stüler . In 1850 he got a job with Stüler in Berlin. From 1851 to 1852 he worked on the drawings for the publication Alt-Christian Baudenkmale von Constantinopel by Wilhelm Salzenberg and from 1854 to 1856 he made illustrations for the history of the visual arts by Carl Schnaase . In 1857/58 he worked as a teacher at the building trade school in Holzminden .

From 1866 to 1869 he completed further training at the Bauakademie in Berlin and then returned to Frankfurt. As a site manager he worked with Adolph Passavant from 1869 to 1871 under the cathedral builder Franz Josef Denzinger on the reconstruction of the Frankfurt Cathedral . He was involved in various restoration projects, including a. the Marienkirche in Gelnhausen . From 1880 to 1896 he worked as a teacher at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Frankfurt. For the building contractor Eduard Anthes he made designs for residential buildings in Frankfurt.

His sons Eugen (1856–1925) and Otto (1876–1945) also became architects.
