Gustav Heller (chemist)

Gustav Heller (born August 23, 1866 in Rheydt , † March 5, 1946 in Leipzig ) was a German chemist and professor at the University of Leipzig .

Heller studied in Berlin, Würzburg and Heidelberg from 1886 to 1890. In 1890 he received his doctorate in Würzburg. phil. with Emil Fischer with the dissertation "On the effect of carbon oxysulphide, phosgene and chlorocarbonic acid ester on phenylhydrazine". In 1890 he became a private assistant in Würzburg, from 1891 to 1900 he worked in the scientific laboratory of the Hoechst paintworks , and from 1904 to 1930 assistant in the laboratory for applied chemistry and pharmacology at the University of Leipzig. Heller invented the synthetic anthraquinone (seed protection agent). In 1904 he completed his habilitation in color chemistry at the University of Leipzig with the thesis: "On the behavior of aniline and its homologues against dihaloacetic acid". Until 1911 he taught as a private lecturer, then he taught as a non-scheduled adjunct professor of chemistry at the University of Leipzig. His main focus was tar paint chemistry . In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler .
