Gustav Hesse (born August 27, 1931 in Bodenbach , Czechoslovakia , † October 24, 2001 in Rostock ) was a German naval officer , most recently Vice Admiral of the People's Navy .

biography

The son of a butcher worked as a baker until 1950 after completing his apprenticeship . On August 15, 1950, he joined the Seepolizeischule Parow as an officer student in the main administration of the Seepolizei of the GDR and attended a special course in the USSR between 1952 and 1954 . After joining the SED in 1953, he was chief of staff from 1954 to 1956 and then chief of the II. Mine-laying and clearing division of the See People's Police . After a brief assignment as head of the training subdivision at the Peenemünde naval base , he completed a degree at the Naval War Academy of the Soviet Union between 1956 and 1960 , which he completed as a graduate military scientist. After his return he was Deputy Chief and Chief of Staff of the 1st Flotilla from 1960 to 1963 .

On November 1, 1963, as frigate captain , he was appointed commander of the 6th flotilla on Rügen , in this role on March 1, 1968, as sea ​​captain and on October 7, 1969, on the 20th anniversary of the GDR, as rear admiral . On May 1, 1971, frigate captain Theodor Hoffmann followed him as flotilla chief.

Rear Admiral Hesse then became Deputy Chief of the People's Navy and Chief of Staff in the command of the People's Navy. On October 7, 1979 he was promoted to Vice Admiral on the 30th anniversary of the GDR . On December 1, 1985, he exchanged positions with Rear Admiral Theodor Hoffmann and was his successor as Chief of Training, while Hoffmann was the new Chief of Staff of the People's Navy. Both admirals were also Deputy Chiefs of the People's Navy. He was released from active service on November 30, 1988.

For his military services he was awarded, among other things, the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver and the battle medal “For merits to the people and fatherland” in silver.
