Gustav König (born April 21, 1808 in Coburg , † April 30, 1869 in Erlangen ) was a German painter .

Life

At the age of 18, in 1826, König got a job at the Schmidt porcelain painting company in his hometown of Coburg. During this time, many drawings were made that had poems by Johann Ludwig Uhland on the subject.

With these, König was able to qualify for the Nuremberg Art School and so he became a student there between 1830 and 1832. Following recommendations from his teachers, König was accepted as a student at the Munich Art Academy in 1833 .

A short time later, King was commissioned by Duke Ernst von Coburg to paint a cycle of seven pictures from Saxon history. As a result, König discovered the Reformation for himself , the history of which he continued to focus on until the end of his life. For this reason, König was soon called "Luther King" by the official art critics as well as by the daily press.

In addition to his “Scenes from Luther's Life” in 48 sheets, which is still famous today , König created the 29 initials for Luther's sacred songs, which were immediately acquired by the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV . The Belgian King Leopold I also acquired several works from the hand of Königs.

The painter Gustav König died on April 30, 1869 in Erlangen at the age of 61.

During his lifetime, the engravers Julius Thaeter and Heinrich Merz created several engravings based on König's oil paintings.
