Gustav Siehr

Gustav Siehr (born September 17, 1837 in Arnsberg , Westphalia , † May 18, 1896 in Munich ) was a German court opera and chamber singer with a bass voice.

Life

As the son of a senior government councilor, Siehr first studied medicine at the Albertus University in Königsberg . In 1858 he became a member of the Corps Littuania . When he was inactive , he moved to the University of Jena and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . In Berlin he decided to train his voice with Julius Krause and Heinrich Dorn . In 1863 he made his debut in Neustrelitz in Bellini's Norma . 1864–65 he was at the German Opera House in Gothenburg , 1865–70 at the German Theater in Prague , 1870–81 at the Wiesbaden Court Theater . In 1881 he went to the Munich Court Opera , of which he remained a member until the end of his life. Siehr was considered a great interpreter of Richard Wagner's operas . He sang repeatedly at the Bayreuth Festival , for example as Hagen in the premiere of Götterdämmerung on August 17, 1876 at the first festival, as Gurnemanz in Parsifal at the festivals 1882–84, 1886 and 1889, and as King Marke at the premiere of Tristan and Isolde at the 1886 Festival. He also sang Gurnemanz in private performances for the Bavarian King Ludwig II at the National Theater in Munich . Wagner held the singer in high esteem. He described his vocal performance and his art of characterization as excellent.
