Gustav Volkmar

Gustav Hermann Joseph Philipp Volkmar (also Volckmar ; born January 11, 1809 in Hersfeld , † January 9, 1893 in Zurich ) was a German classical philologist and Protestant theologian. From 1862 he was professor for the New Testament at the University of Zurich .

Life

Gustav Volkmar grew up in a musical family as the son of the Hersfeld city organist and later Rinteln high school teacher Adam Valentin Volckmar . His brother Wilhelm Valentin Volckmar became a composer. After graduating from high school in Rinteln , Gustav Volkmar studied theology and philology in Marburg from 1829 to 1832 . In 1833 he first became a high school teacher at his old school. After a brief teaching position in Kassel, he was called to his home town of Hersfeld in 1837 , where he married and started a family. In 1838 he received his doctorate. phil. at the University of Marburg . From 1845 to 1852 Volkmar worked in Marburg and Fulda as a high school professor .

As early as 1846 Volkmar supported the liberal-Catholic movement of the German Catholics , who were also in opposition to princely absolutism. After he had published an anonymous pamphlet against the revision policy of the Hessian authorities under the Ludwig Hassenpflug ministry in 1850 , Volkmar was imprisoned at the end of 1852 and removed from his office. Out of custody, he was appointed private lecturer for the New Testament at the University of Zurich in 1853 . In 1862 he was appointed professor and full professor in the same subject. Volkmar worked in Zurich until the end of his life in 1893. He stood out primarily with contributions to the historical-critical exegesis of the New Testament and to the oldest church history.
