Guy Lipscombe (* 1881 ; † 1952 ) was a British painter and illustrator .

Guy Lipscombe's works include predominantly motorsport and war scenes , landscape , portrait and genre paintings . He used various painting techniques, especially charcoal, watercolor and oil paints. Earlier Postcards wear only the signature Guy L .

Britishers enlist to-day (1917 version)

In 1903 Guy Lipscombe was hired by London's Temple Press as a motorsport painter for The Motor magazine (later Motor ). In 1906 he painted the well-known British Recruitment Rail Office poster Britishers enlist to-day with the Union Jack , which was used again during the First World War to recruit for military service.

In 1907 he painted the oil painting that is now in the stairwell of the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) in London. It shows a racing scene between Felice Nazzaro ( Fiat 130 HP Corsa) and Claude Richez ( Renault AK ) at the Grand Prix race in Dieppe . Racing photos of him can be found in almost all of the world's well-known automobile museums.

Lipscombe painted on the Italian front during World War I and on Gallipoli for the Imperial War Museum (IWM), whose collection includes his pictures The Arrival of the First Guns on the Carso Front, Italy, 1916 (ca.1917), A First- Line Dressing Station, Doberdo, Isonzo Front, Italy (1917) British Red Cross Ambulance, Italian Front, 1916 (1918), Castelfranco: Italian Troops resting en Route to the Piave Front (1918). The IWM's collection also includes his 1944 picture Invasion Training in Cornwall , which was created during the Second World War . The Wellcome Library holds his painting First World War: A Group of Casualities in a Room under a Gas Lamp (1919).

From 1919 he painted for The Motor Owner magazine , then for many years for The Autocar magazine , possibly as a freelance artist.

From 1908 Guy Lipscombe also exhibited his works, including in the context of the exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters , at the Dudley Museum and Art Gallery and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Owned by the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery , Plymouth , his painting of St Andrew's as a Garden Church is in the Garden Museum , Lambeth , the painting A Garden in Summer and the Torquay Museum, Torquay , Cockington, Torquay .

In 1934 he portrayed Lady Emily Roney, who was the first woman mayor of Wimbledon from 1933 to 1935 .
