Guy Saunier

Guy Auguste André Saunier , often under the pseudonym Michel Saunier ( Greek Γκυ Σωνιέ or Greek Μισέλ Σωνιέ , born February 9, 1934 in Marseille ) is a French neo-Greekist .

Life

After attending the Lycée Thiers in Marseille and studying Classical Philology at the Sorbonne and Neo- Greek Studies at INALCO , which he completed in 1968 with a thesis on Greek wedding songs, Saunier was a research assistant at the CNRS . In 1975 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on injustice in Greek folk song. From 1984 to 2003 he was Professor of Modern Greek Philology and Head of the Institut Néo-Hellénique at the Sorbonne.

In 2005 he received an honorary doctorate from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki .

Michel Lassithiotakis and Emmanuelle Moser-Karagiannis are among his students .

Research priorities

Saunier's research ranges from Greek folk song , including the moirologion , and late medieval literature to Alexandros Papadiamantis , Melpo Axioti and Nikos Kavvadias , the hyperrealists , the generation of the 1930s , especially Andreas Embirikos , and current modern Greek literature. Under the pseudonym Michel Saunier, he has produced numerous translations of Greek authors into French.
