Michel Lassithiotakis

Michel Lassithiotakis ( Greek Μιχάλης Λασιθιοτάκης ; * 1955 ; † June 23, 2012 in Paris ) was a French neo-Greekist and professor of modern Greek language and literature at the University of Geneva .

Life

As a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure de Paris and after studying classical philology ( lettres classiques ), Lassithiotakis was a scholarship holder at the Institut Hellénique d'Études byzantines et post-byzantines in Venice . In 1985 he received his doctorate at the University of Paris IV with Guy Saunier with a dissertation on the preacher and writer Frangiskos Skoufos (Φραγκίσκος Σκούφος, 1644–1697). Since 1988 he has been Maître de conférences there , since 2011 full professor for modern Greek language and literature, since 1995 at the same time professor of the Unité de Grec moderne in the Département des langues et des littératures méditerranéennes, slaves et orientales of the Faculté des Lettres of the University of Geneva. He was a member of the Comité of the Association Suisse des Amis de la Fondation Sainte-Catherine , which supports the conservation work in particular in the library of the St. Catherine's Monastery on Sinai .

Research priorities

Lassithiotakis worked on the modern Greek language and on early modern Greek literature, including edition philology and text history. He was particularly interested in modern Greek epics and novels from the 12th to 15th centuries. Local focal points were the Cretan literature of the Renaissance - above all the Apokopos of a not well-known Bergadis (Μπεργαδής), for which he was preparing a critical text edition, the Erotocritos of Kornaros and the Cretan Renaissance theater - as well as the Cypriot and Rhodian poetry of the 15th and 16th centuries Century. His preoccupation with rhetoric and homiletics as well as the relationship between Orthodoxy and Catholicism in the 16th and 17th centuries resulted from this focus . Lassithiotakis showed a particular interest in the field of modern literature in the work of Nikos Kazantzakis . He has also published numerous translations of Greek poets into French, particularly in the magazines Polyphonies and Levant .
