Bertrand Bouvier , Greek Μπερτράν Μπουβιέ (born November 6, 1929 in Zurich ) is a Swiss neo- Greekist .

Life

Bouvier is the son of the Protestant pastor André Bouvier and grandson of the professor of French literature at the University of Geneva Bernard Bouvier , the editor of Henri-Frédéric Amiel , who was also rector of the university from 1906 to 1908. The writer Nicolas Bouvier , whose collection of poems Le Dehors et le dedans he translated into modern Greek, is his cousin.

Bouvier studied Classics and Modern Languages at the University of Geneva and obtained in 1952 the licentiate . From 1956 to 1975 he taught ancient Greek at the Collège de Genève , today's Collège Calvin , from 1956 to 1972 at the same time Modern Greek at the École de Traduction et d'Interprétation de Genève; from 1957 to 1976 he was a lecturer for modern Greek and from 1957 to 1960 at the same time assistant for ancient Greek and Latin at the Faculté des Lettres of the University of Geneva. There he received his doctorate in 1974 with a dissertation on the Mirologion and two years later he was appointed associate professor for neo-Greek studies, and in 1979 he was appointed full professor. In 1995 he retired.

Bouvier is a student of Samuel Baud-Bovy , with whom he founded the Geneva School of Neo-Greek Studies .

Awards

Bouvier was appointed commander of the Greek Order of the Phoenix in 1988 , a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens in 1998 and a doctor honoris causa of the University of Cyprus in 2008.

Research priorities

Apart from the Mirologion, a funeral song composed and sung by women in the tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church , Bouvier worked in the field of modern Greek literature on folk songs , contemporary poets from Thessaloniki , the poet Andreas Kalvos and Cypriot poetry. He has published a volume with photographs of Mount Athos by Fred Boissonnas with his own texts. Most recently, together with Anastasia Danae Lazaridis , he edited a French-language manuscript in the library of Geneva , in which the Greek scholar Iakovakis Rizos Nerulos , who was temporarily in Geneva , criticized the Charte Turque ou Organization religieuse, civile et militaire de l'Empire Ottoman by the Italian Alfio Grassi (1766–1827). He has devoted various studies to Greek and Neo- Greek studies in Geneva (Iakovakis Rizos Nerulos, 1778–1849; Élie Ami Bétant , 1803–1871; Samuel Baud-Bovy, 1906–1986). He has also translated a book of poems by the Greek writer Thanasis Valtinos into French.

After his retirement, in collaboration with Frédéric Amsler and François Bovon , he turned to the apocryphal literature of Christian tradition, in particular the Acts of Philip , the Pauline Apocalypse and the Acts of Peter , and contributed to a critical edition of the source Q of the Logia .
