Samuel Baud-Bovy

Samuel Baud-Bovy (born November 27, 1906 in Geneva ; † November 2, 1986 ibid) was a Swiss musician, a specialist in Greek church and folk music , ethnomusicologist , neo-Greekist and politician. Among other things, he was a councilor for the city of Geneva from 1943 to 1947 .

Baud-Bovy was born in Geneva in 1906 as the son of the painter and writer Daniel Baud-Bovy . He first studied humanities in Geneva (doctorate in 1936) and Paris as well as violin with Fernand Closset at the Conservatoire de musique de Genève . He also received private composition lessons from Charles Chaix . In 1926/27 he studied conducting with Rudolf Nilius and music history with Guido Adler in Vienna. Further studies abroad in composition led him to Paul Dukas in 1928/29 and in musicology to André Pirro in Paris. In Basel he was taught conducting by Felix Weingartner and in Geneva by Hermann Scherchen . From 1929 to 1931 he studied church and folk music in Greece.

From 1933 to 1935 he worked as an orchestra teacher at the Geneva Conservatory and from 1942 to 1973 as a conductor. He brought works by u. a. Henri Gagnebin , Frank Martin and Constantin Regamey for the world premiere. After he was deputy director from 1947, he worked from 1957 to 1970 as director of the Geneva Conservatory. From 1931 to 1958 he was a teacher of Modern Greek at the University of Geneva, in 1958 he was awarded an honorary professorship .

He was also director of the Société de Chant Sacré from 1938 to 1977 . From 1955 to 1960 he was President of the Swiss Tonkünstlerverein (in personal union with the Swiss section of the International Society for New Music). From 1961 to 1963 he was President of the International Society for Music Education . In 1977 he was elected to the governing body of the International Council for Traditional Music .

Baud-Bovy was married to Lyvia Angst, daughter of the sculptor Carl Albert Angst .
