The Franziskaneum grammar school is located on the Ratsweinberg above the historic city of Meißen and can be seen from afar.

history

In 1539 the first secondary school in Meissen was founded in the dissolved Franciscan monastery . It was a municipal Latin school for boys. Another Latin school was later set up in the Sankt Afra monastery, today the Saxon State High School Sankt Afra . In 1874 the various municipal high schools were merged.

In 1905 the foundation stone was laid for a secondary school. The inauguration of the new building took place in 1907 as a Realschule and Realgymnasium. The name "Franciscaneum" was approved in 1925 and celebrated with an anniversary festival. In 1938, the Realgymnasium with the secondary girls' school was renamed "Fichte-Schule". During the Second World War the school was used as a hospital.

Location of the high school in the Vorbrücke district

The start of teaching as the "Ernst Schneller Oberschule", later the Extended Oberschule " Ernst Schneller ", took place in 1945. The school tower that shapes the silhouette of the school was demolished in 1969. It was rebuilt in 1991 and inaugurated in 1992. In 1999, the school hit the headlines when the 15-year-old student Andreas S. killed the German and history teacher Sigrun Leuteritz with 22 stab wounds in front of his class. In 2005 the Neumarkt branch was closed. The auditorium was restored from August 2006 to March 2007.

In September 2007 the centenary of the Franciscaneum took place.

At the beginning of 2011, work began on building a connecting part for the two school buildings, in which a new dining room and 4 classrooms are to be accommodated. The old dining room will be converted into 3 classrooms. The new building was inaugurated in 2012. Its equipment includes u. a. 2 interactive boards.
