The high school Schwertstraße Solingen is the oldest and most traditional of the four Solingen high schools.

history

It was founded on October 15, 1841 as a higher middle school. The first director from 1841 to 1864 was Jacob Martin Philippi, who had previously worked as a secondary school teacher in Elberfeld . After the school was housed in various buildings in the first few years, including the town hall and the Catholic rectory, it moved into its own building in 1859. In 1860 the city took over the school sponsorship. In 1898 the grammar school moved into a new building on Schwertstrasse because the previous school building had become too small. During the war, schoolchildren were sent to Ilmenau in Thuringia via the children's area . After severe bomb damage in World War II , the building was rebuilt in 1951/52 in the outlines of the old structure, but with a simpler facade. Until the end of the reconstruction, the students were housed in nearby schools.

The school was purely a boys' grammar school until 1971 and has been co-educational with more than 1000 students (as of 2006) since then. Her special offers include a bilingual branch with English-language specialist instruction already in lower secondary level as well as student exchange contacts with the cities of Chatham ( England ) (boys ' exchange ), Stratford-upon-Avon (England) (girls' exchange ), Chalon-sur-Saône ( France ) and Istanbul ( Turkey ).

particularities

Great importance is attached to participation in school competitions; High school students were often successful in the fields of science ( mathematics Olympiad , youth research ), music ( youth makes music ) and business ( stock market simulation game , German start-up award , automotive education award ).

In addition, there is a wide range of support for the gifted. In cooperation with the Carl Duisberg Society, two students at the school are awarded scholarships for language stays abroad every year.
