Werner Saam
Werner Saam (born May 3, 1900 in Solingen ; † January 12, 1960 ibid) was a German pianist , choir director and conductor .
Werner Saam studied piano, composition , choral conducting and school music at the Cologne University of Music with Hermann Abendroth . After completing his studies, he mainly performed as a pianist and gave numerous concerts, but he was also in demand as an accompanist for singers such as Tiana Lemnitz , Erna Berger and Peter Anders . In 1926 he appeared several times at the World's Fair in Philadelphia .
Also in 1926, Saam took over the management of the Schubert League in his hometown . In 1929 he succeeded Professor Heinrich Boell as municipal music director and as such shaped the musical landscape of the city for decades: “Werner Saam is associated with a well-established concept in Solingen's cultural life that only experienced that significant rise, as Saam in 1929, out of nowhere, so to speak built up a municipal orchestra and systematically developed it from success to success. ” He also took over - especially in the war and post-war years - the direction of several choirs such as the MGV Rheinsage , where he also initiated the founding of a children's choir, or the men's choir The Wupperhofer . He also gave music lessons at the Schwertstrasse grammar school and supported talented young singers such as Friedrich Eugen Engels and Hetty Plümacher . During a concert in the Ohligser Festhalle in 1960 Werner Saam suffered a heart attack at the conductor's desk.
