Heinz Rosenthal (born January 29, 1906 in Dessau , † July 18, 1973 on a trip to Athlone , Ireland ) was a German educator , local researcher and historian .

Life and work

Heinz Rosenthal graduated from high school in his hometown at Easter 1924 and began studying philology with the subjects German, history and geography at the Georg-August University in Göttingen in the summer semester of 1924 . In the summer semester of 1926 he moved to the University of Leipzig . In 1928 he passed the examination for the higher education authority and did the preparatory service at the humanistic Friedrichsgymnasium in Dessau. After the second state examination, he was a study assessor at a grammar school in Bernburg . In 1941 he was called up for military service, was a lieutenant at the end of the war and was taken prisoner by the British, from which he was released at the end of 1945. Heinz Rosenthal resumed teaching in 1947 in Solingen. He worked at the Solingen boys' grammar school in Schwertstrasse . There he was also entrusted with the management of the pedagogical study seminar at this school. In 1957, he was promoted to senior teacher; 1970 as director of studies.

historian

Extracurricular activities made Heinz Rosenthal known in the city and far beyond. From 1952 to 1973 he was chairman of the Solingen department of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein . Because of his publications on the history of Solingen, the Society for Rhenish History appointed him a member in 1971.

Rosenthal's three-volume History of the City of Solingen was published between 1969 and 1975, the only comprehensive academic account of the city's history. The last volume of the work was published posthumously.

Heinz Rosenthal had been a member of the Hannovera Göttingen fraternity since his studies , long-time chairman of the Association of Old Fraternity Members (VaB) in Solingen and most recently its honorary chairman.

Honors

On April 17, 1973, a few months before his death, Heinz Rosenthal received the Ring of Honor of the City of Solingen for the first two volumes of his city history, because he has made particular contributions to the city's well-being through his many years of voluntary work.
