The "Walter Gropius" grammar school is a grammar school in Dessau-Roßlau . Since 1993 it has been named after the first director of the Bauhaus , Walter Gropius .
history
The school building was opened on April 24, 1935 as a primary school for the southern part of the city of Dessau , which was characterized by Bauhaus buildings. It was the first school in Anhalt that was equipped with a paved schoolyard. From 1936 the students could use their own gym. After 1945 the buildings initially housed the 5th and 8th elementary school, later the 5th Polytechnic High School in Dessau (from 1985 5th POS "Paul Schulze"). In 1967 the astronomical station "Samuel Heinrich Schwabe" was put into operation on the school grounds .
In order to meet the growing demand for high school education after 1990, new high schools were built in Dessau. This school was also converted into a grammar school from the 1991/92 school year. Since July 9, 1993, the school previously called the "Dessau-Süd" grammar school has been called the "Walter Gropius" grammar school. The general renovation of the school building began a year later. It was renewed in three construction phases. After five years of construction work taking place in parallel with lessons, the keys to the school building were handed over on November 23, 1998. In autumn 2000, work on the design of the school grounds was completed. The two schoolyards were renewed and, above all, the sports field was redesigned. The high school's astronomical station consists of a planetarium and an observation station and was reopened in August 2009 after a year of urban renovation. Since April 30, 2004, the grammar school has been a school with a European orientation and is also called the European School .

Focus
The European orientation as a European school is reflected in the close cooperation with partner schools. This also includes the implementation of a Comenius project in compulsory elective lessons. In addition, pupils take part in the European art competition. In study trips to La Rochelle (France), London (England) and Rome (Italy), as well as in various exchange projects with partner schools from different countries, there is an intensive study of the languages. The focus is on deepening and consolidating acquired knowledge, as well as cultural exchange.
A collaboration with the Bauhaus in art classes brings students closer to the dimensions of European and international architecture. Furthermore, talents receive special support and funding in interdisciplinary projects and when participating in artistic competitions.
Others
The Walter-Gropius-Gymnasium has its own school library. There is an art workshop on the school premises that has a ceramic kiln and has been used as a classroom since the 2015/16 school year. In addition to the main building, the Tempelhofer Straße elementary school is used as a branch, especially for the Abitur classes.
