history

The Rhine was an important trade route between the North Sea and the Mediterranean as early as the Bronze Age , Hallstatt Age and Latène Age . There was rowing, sailing, stomping and trekking . In Roman times, the strategic importance for the Roman Rhine fleet was added. After the fall of the Roman Empire, navigation on the Rhine was maintained through all times and rafting was also carried out until the end of the 19th century .

It is not known when the first protective harbor with a basin separated from the Rhine river was created in Speyer. It is known, however, that it was at the mouth of the Speyerbach . It is not yet listed on a map of Speyer's 1645 or was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War . On a pen drawing from 1750, however, it is clearly visible as lying next to the Rhine.

In 1847 a rail connection was created for the first time.

In World War II, the facilities were largely destroyed. In the execution of Hitler's Nero order (March 19, 1945), the neighboring Rhine bridge was finally blown up by German troops on March 23, 1945 .

From 1951/52 the reconstruction took place; In 1953 the docks were rebuilt in their present form.

Commerce and infrastructure

Today the commercial port facilities cover 95  hectares of water and a further 48 hectares of the shipyard. 2.8 km of quays are available, 700 m of which are also connected to siding of the port railway, which enables trimodal cargo handling. Large Rhine ships with a length of 110 m can turn directly in the port basin. The port can accommodate inland waterway vessels with a displacement of up to 5,200 t and is now mainly used for handling mineral oil products. As a safe haven, the facility can only accommodate vehicles of hazard class 3a .

traffic

The ports in Speyer are accessible via the federal highway 39 ; a branch track from Speyer station connects the rail traffic of the port railway with the railway line Rheinbahn (Baden) .
