The Hôtel des Rohan in Soubise , a commune in the Charente-Maritime in the French region Nouvelle-Aquitaine , was at the beginning of the 17th century in the style of Renaissance built. In 1928 it was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a Monument historique .

history

The barony of Soubise came in 1575 by the marriage of Catherine de Parthenay with René II., The Viscount of Rohan , in the possession of the house Rohan . Presumably Catherine de Parthenay had the Hôtel des Rohan built at the beginning of the 17th century. Her great-granddaughter, Anne-Julie de Rohan-Chabot , became famous as the mistress of the French King Louis XIV , who in 1667 elevated the rule of Soubise to a principality. Anne-Julie's husband, François de Rohan-Soubise, became the first prince of Soubise . At the end of the 17th century, Louis XIV acquired the Hotel de Rohan and set up a hospital there, which was in operation until the French Revolution . The building then served as a school, and the town hall has been here since 1982.

architecture

The facade with its five dormers, the entrance portal and inside the staircase with its stone staircase are still preserved from the original building. The portal is framed by two pilasters decorated with arabesques . In the middle of the blasted gable is a rocaille cartouche , which formerly contained the coat of arms of the Rohan-Soubise house. The dormers are crowned by vases.

Part of the surrounding wall also dates from the early 17th century. A frieze of fruit garlands and trophies runs along the top of this wall . A gate with a triangular gable is cut into the wall.
