geography

River course

The Hülzlgraben is being built at the end of Am Behlanger street in the Rehhof district in Laufamholz in the city of Nuremberg. The stream runs eastwards directly on the embankment of the railway line railway line Nuremberg – Schwandorf , at the end of this line in the Laufamholzer Forest , a community-free area in the central Franconian district of Nürnberger Land . After crossing under the railway and changing direction to the northwest, the stream, now in the Freiland district , can still be seen for a few meters, then disappears into pipes as an extension of Henfenfelder Straße and along this almost completely underground. Only in the area of house number 23 is there an open stream bed that is visible from the access bridge to the property.

Only at the confluence of Andersenstrasse and Henfenfelder Strasse does the Hülzlgraben reappear. Here it runs in an easterly, later north-easterly direction in a partially canalized bed surrounded by houses very close. Shortly before reaching Strindbergstraße, the stream disappears again into a pipe that now runs northwards, crosses under the street, the adjacent houses and also the state road 2241 (Nürnberg – Hiltpoltstein) (Laufamholzstraße) and continues underground to the Rüblander Ufer, where it only briefly flows reappears in a walled canal and then flows into the lower Pegnitz from the left.

Floodplain

The city of Nuremberg manages the Hülzlgraben as a temporarily secured floodplain. With this method of secured floodplain areas, areas are identified that are likely to be flooded in the event of a design flood. In some areas, this leads to considerable restrictions, especially in terms of development. The consequences of the almost complete overbuilding of the stream can be observed again and again in Laufamholz with heavy rainfall.

"Example Hülzlgraben in the area of Strindbergstrasse: Deficit" self-created "flood hazard, development up to the water, elimination of retention area!"
