HP Zinker was a rock band rooted in the Lower Eastside scene, playing with bands like the Sonic Youth , Ween , Helmet (band) , Lemonheads, and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion .

history

In the summer of 1989 the band was founded in New York by the two Innsbruckers Hans Platzgumer and Andi Pümpel (stage name Frank Pümpel - he didn't like the American pronounced Andy) . For their first album "... And There Was Light" a drum computer was used. It contains a cover version of Led Zeppelin's " Dancing Days " and was the first release by Matador Records . With the second studio album “Beyond It All”, released in 1990, HP Zinker became a trio: American drummer Dave Wasik joined the band.

The 1991 released "The Sunshine EP" contained, among other things, a remake of the "Sunshine" contained on the first album, a version of Dave Brubeck's " Take Five " and Evan Dandos ( Lemonheads ) guest appearance as the singer of "To One in Paradise".

At the time of “Perseverance” (1992) Andi Pümpel left the band because he could no longer cope with the band and tour life. Platzgumer and Wasik brought ex-Skunk guitarist Stephan Apicella (aka Stevie Apathetic) as the third man in the band.

For the 1995 album "Mountains of Madness", the last album before HP Zinker broke up, bassist Uvey Batruel (actually Uwe Batruel) joined the band. The text of the title track is from HP Lovecraft . Stefan Sagmeister's cover design won several design awards and was nominated for a Grammy .
