The HAM 308 was a Dutch dredger of the hopper dredger type . It collided with a tanker in the Jade Estuary in 1971 and sank, killing seven people.

Collision 1971

The HAM 308 was used in 1971 for dredging the Jade fairway, which has been deepened since 1970 in order to enable tankers of greater depth to call at the Wilhelmshaven ports . On the morning of August 19, east of Minsener Oog, with good visibility and calm weather, there was a collision with the Norwegian tanker Polycastle , which was measured at 26,376  GT and was partly loaded with oil on the way from Wilhelmshaven to Hamburg . An emergency call was made at 8:40 a.m. The HAM 308 sank within a few minutes after the collision. There were 30 people on board, including, in addition to the crew members, members of the building supervision and divers from Wilhelmshaven. Several ships and SAR helicopters recovered one seriously injured and 22 uninjured survivors. Two people were killed in the collision, five initially missing. They were later found dead on board.

The recovery of the ship proved difficult because of the weather and the strong currents and dragged on until the second half of October 1971. With the help of several floating cranes , it was initially possible to pull the HAM 308 onto a sandbank . On October 25, 1971, the ship was towed to Wilhelmshaven and docked in the local naval arsenal on November 10 . A hole measuring 7 m × 10 m was found in the outer skin.

The exact course of the collision could not be clarified in the Maritime Administration hearing . On December 13, 1971, the Bremerhaven Maritime Office found the dredger's command guilty of the collision without harming any individual. It was also complained that the tanker's pilot had not made radio contact with the dredger.

Whereabouts

After the recovery, the HAM 308 was towed to the Netherlands, where it was repaired and put back into operation.

The ship was so badly damaged on February 25, 1993 in Hong Kong by the explosion of a sucked in 500-pound bomb that it was declared a total loss. The wreck was scrapped in Xinhui, China, in December 1993 .
