HDClone is a cloning and data backup program from Miray Software. It supports the sector-by-sector and file system-based copying of data carriers and thus enables the creation of a physically as well as logically identical copy. Supported x86 - and x64 - computer architectures , the Windows desktop versions XP through 10 and Windows Server versions from 2003 to 2016. HDClone is offered for download - the purchase version can also be purchased as a copy on CD. Freemium is used as the license model . In terms of pricing, HDClone is intended for use by home and professional users. HDClone is offered in seven languages (the website focuses on German and English), has several hundred thousand users worldwide and has been sold in over 140 countries.

Overview

Functionality

HDClone is primarily used to clone data carriers and to create or restore data carrier images . In general there is the possibility to start HDClone directly under Windows or as stand-alone from a start medium ( English: "boot medium"). A bare metal restore can be implemented with the help of the start medium .

Under Windows, HDClone offers a command line , which enables automated control, e.g. B. in combination with the Windows task scheduler . With the Enterprise Edition, up to 16 data carriers can be written at once. With the additional tool Miray Virtual Disk , images can be integrated as virtual data carriers under Windows ( English: "mounted") in order to be able to access their contents.

Editions

HDClone is offered in several editions. The Free Edition is free of charge and offers basic functionality for cloning and creating or restoring images. A purchased version of the software is required for additional functionality. The additional functions include:

  • a lower, or even no, throttling of the data transfer rate.
  • unlimited volumes.
  • File-based data transfer.
  • Differential images.
  • Control via the command line.
  • Parallel writing of up to 16 data carriers in one run.

Tools

Depending on the edition, HDClone comes with the following additional software modules:

  • Sector editor for disk.
  • Disk speed test.
  • Info center for data carriers (e.g. for the SMART values).
  • Partition Editor ( MBR / GPT )
  • TRIM tool for SSDs.
  • Tool for creating an ISO file from an optical disc .
  • Tool for editing registry hives .
  • Miray Virtual Disk : Separate tool for mounting images as virtual disks.

File systems

HDClone supports, depending on the edition, the following functionalities for the listed file systems .

File system File-based copy Enlarge Zoom out Defragment
FAT Yes Yes Yes Yes
ExFAT Yes Yes Yes Yes
NTFS Yes Yes Yes Yes
ReFS Yes Yes No No
ext2 - 4 Yes Yes No No
XFS Yes Yes No No
HFS + Yes Yes Yes Yes

Boot medium

It is possible to make a USB data carrier or an optical medium bootable in order to start HDClone directly, independently of Windows. This also enables operating systems to be copied under which the HDClone executable file cannot be started. Either Miray Symobi or Linux is used as the host operating system .

Symobi

Symobi is Miray Software's proprietary real-time operating system, which in the first 5 years (up to HDClone 3.5) served as the sole basis for starting HDClone using a boot medium . Symobi is based on the message-oriented µnOS operating system, which in turn is based on the real-time kernel Sphere.

µnOS was officially presented on August 1, 2001 with version 0.92. In the meantime, Sphere SP 2.0 was published on May 14, 2002. Symobi was then presented to the professional world for the first time with version 1.2 in 2006 at the Systems trade fair. And a year later again the version 1.4 with multicore support for up to 32 processor cores.

Miray Virtual Disk

With the additional tool Miray Virtual Disk , the images created with HDClone can be integrated as virtual data carriers under Windows . This then enables access to the contained data via Windows Explorer . Depending on the edition, 1 to 7 images can be integrated at the same time, this is also permanent and writable. If the content of an embedded image is changed, an overlay is created for it, which acts as a differential image . This can then be included when restoring the respective image.

history

HDClone 1.0 was announced on March 31, 2003 and officially presented on April 25, 2003. HDClone started as a stand-alone product that could only be started with the help of a boot medium. After five years, as of version 3.6, it was also possible to start HDClone directly under Windows. The parallel writing of several data carriers, on the other hand, was implemented a year earlier for the Enterprise Edition. In 2010, Version 3.9 added a command line to enable automated control. In the same year, the additional tool Miray Virtual Disk came out for version 4.0 , with which images can be opened as virtual data carriers. Four years later, version 5.0 was equipped with support for SATA hot-plugging . Since 2017, as of HDClone 7, it has been possible to use Linux as the host operating system for the start medium ( English: "boot medium") .

reception

  • "HDClone is excellently suited for making an identical copy of smaller hard drives." Michael Humpa ( CHIP Software Editorial Team), April 11, 2016
  • “HDClone is a fast, clear and sophisticated program. The use of HDClone can effectively protect against data loss both privately and in the company. ”( Netzwelt ), April 12, 2015
  • “The HDClone Free Edition makes it easy to clone, create images, or back up drives and data.” (Original English text: “HDClone Free Edition makes it easy to clone, create images, or back up drives and data.”) ( CNET ) January 6, 2015

Reports

From various German-language computer magazines such as PC Magazin , Computerbild , com! , Computerwoche and Chip , tips for using the program and for duplicating hard disk contents were published. At the international level, HDClone is mainly described in online journalism .

The Free Edition was praised in several reports for its ease of use and recommended for copying complete, smaller hard drives. The Free Edition was criticized for its limitations in functions that are only available in the paid versions. The reduced data transfer rate was often mentioned. Some reports emphasize the use of the boot medium, which enables it to be used independently of the installed operating system.

literature

HDClone is mentioned as an example of cloning software in some international specialist books.

Some international specialist books use HDClone as a case study for cloning software with a detailed description:

Trivia

  • Up to version 5 a comic sheep, the clone sheep Sheepy, was used as the mascot of HDClone. This can be based on the real clone sheep Dolly .
  • With the release of HDClone 6, six software boxes with a dedication and signature by the developer were raffled, which also contained a copy of the computer game The Ultimate Doom .
  • The HDClone Free Edition has been part of the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) since September 8, 2003, a bootable CD with a collection of software tools, most of which are used for system diagnostics.
  • With the license information, HDClone occasionally wishes a happy birthday (e.g. Marius on April 16, Franziska on April 20 or Alex on May 1).
