The port of Koper ( Slovenian Luka Koper ) is the international seaport of Koper in Slovenia . He is from the corporation d Luka Koper. d. operated, which was majority state-owned in 2018.

Location, organization, importance

The port of Koper is a multi-purpose port in the north of the Adriatic Sea in the Gulf of Trieste . It connects Central and Eastern Europe with the Mediterranean and via the Strait of Gibraltar and the Suez Canal with America and the Far East . The water depth in the port ranges from 7 to 18 meters. Ships with a capacity of up to 180,000 tons can call at the port. In 2017 the port was called by more than 1900 ships, the handling of containers amounted to 911,000  TEU . The port of Koper is an EU port with BIP (Border Inspection Post) status.

The entire port area has the status of a free trade zone . The port of Koper is an intermodal trade connection with various forms of transport and handling systems: Ro-Ro technology , equipment for the handling and storage of general goods , project goods , containers , vehicles, bulk and liquid goods and live animals.

The port is organized into nine usage centers, where specialized terminal activities are carried out. All terminals are located directly on the coast and are equipped with modern handling, transport and storage technology.

The hinterland of the port extends over the entire area of ​​Central and Eastern Europe and extends from Slovenia and Austria to Hungary , Italy , Croatia , the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Poland and southern Germany . For Austria, in 2010, 2012 and 2013 it was the overseas port with the largest cargo handling. The port is connected via the Avtocesta A1 and the Prešnica – Koper railway line. The port company Koper has branch offices in Vienna and Munich . The operating company Luka Koper founded the railway company Adria Transport d.oo in a joint venture with Graz-Köflacher Bahn und Busbetrieb GmbH in 2005 in order to strengthen the logistics chain also via rail into the hinterland. The first block trains with kerosene were brought to Vienna-Schwechat Airport in summer 2008 .
