Overview map of the Königsmoor near Hagen / Bremen

The moor, the southern part of which is designated as the “ Südliches Hagener Königsmoor ” nature reserve , is located southwest of Hagen in Bremen on the edge of the Geest in the transition to the Drepte lowland .

The moor, which was originally called Hagener Ahemoor, was granted to interested parties by the Kingdom of Hanover between 1820 and 1845 . As a result, areas were from the edge of ditches drained and hand peat mined. From 1971 to 1996, large parts of the bog, which was between six and eight meters thick, were mechanically peated.

History of the Königsmoor

About 10,000 years ago the fertile marshland formed in the glacial valley of the Weser. The Geest was formed between the mountains of rubble and sand left behind by the glaciers of the Ice Age . Drainage-free and deeper depressions filled with surface water. From the edge of vegetation and peat moss , the formed peat . Millimeter by millimeter, the peat layer in the Königsmoor grew to a thickness of up to eight meters. In Christian times there was only one way through the Ahemoor, today Königsmoor, over to the Grienenbergsmoor over the Mühlenberg and the Hohe Heide to Uthlede . This path was called "Scharrisdamm" until the 18th century. That was the Low German form of "Ansgari-Damm", after Archbishop Ansgar , who worked in Bremen from 831 to 865. That should have been the Kirchenweg to Bremen - the road from Hagen to Uthlede still follows it today. At the end of the 18th century, the economic value of peat as fuel and the pitted area as arable and grazing land was discovered. The Hagener Ahemoor was awarded by the state, that was the King of Hanover at that time , to interested parties under Meierrecht and has been called Königsmoor ever since. When hand peat was digged in summer, the water was drained away through drainage ditches, which were then closed again in winter when the peat was brought in. One or two loads of peat were dug on hundreds of plots - that would have changed little in the natural landscape for a long time. From 1971 to 1999 the peat was extracted mechanically and used economically in horticulture. This destroyed the millennia-old moor habitat. It was now a desert for the animals and plants. In 1999, most of the owners agreed to the rewetting of the Königsmoor. Thanks to their understanding and the financial support of the nature conservation authority of the district of Cuxhaven, the municipality of Hagen and the use of EU funds, it was possible to preserve and develop again a piece of the natural area that had already been believed to be lost.
