Louis Haghe (born March 17, 1806 in Tournai , † March 9, 1885 in Stockwell , now London ) was a Belgian lithographer , watercolor painter , architect and painter .

Life

Louis Haghe's professional path in the visual arts was determined by his father. He was an architect and also gave him the first lessons. Later, at the instigation of de la Barrières, a former French emigrant, Haghe turned to the landscape subject and created various stone drawings for his picturesque views of Belgium.

In 1832 Haghe went to London and worked for the lithographic institute of Day and Son for many years on the magnificent works published by the institute on Spain and Portugal , Belgium and Germany , Egypt and Nubia . At the same time he devoted himself to watercolor painting , and the strong, glossy coloring of his pictures was very well received. His representations were also characterized by the rich figure staffage in the fashion of the 16th or 17th century . One of his first and at the same time most important works was the “Council of War in Courtray” ( National Gallery in London) in 1839 . From 1856 onwards, with less luck, he also turned to oil painting .

From his many trips to the continent, Haghe brought back an extensive collection of architectural drawings, primarily the interiors of older buildings, e. B. the choir of Santa Maria Novella in Florence , the interior of the hall in Bruges and St. Mark's Basilica in Venice , a part of St. Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent, a Flemish tavern, the courtyard of the Hotel Tiberio on Capri , the interior of the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Sistine Chapel . He published a number of these views from 1840 to 1850 in a three-part series "Drawings from Belgium and Germany".

Louis Haghe became a member and later President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors in London and died on March 9, 1885 in the city in which he had mainly lived and worked.
