Hai & Topsy (Heinrich Frankl; * February 14, 1920 in Charlottenbrunn (Silesia); † January 13, 2016 and Gunnel Frankl, née Wahlström, * October 20, 1926 in Stockholm † May 28, 2020 ) are a Swedish folk duo as well Collectors and editors of Yiddish songs.

Life

Heinrich Frankl grew up in Wiesbaden . His father came from Vienna. With an affidavit that friends from his Wiesbaden group of the Neroth Wandering Bird got him, as well as a visa that Quakers gave him, he managed to escape to Sweden as a 19-year-old three days before the outbreak of the Second World War; his Jewish parents were probably killed in the Litzmannstadt camp . At first he worked in a nursery. With Heinz Goldstein he appeared as the Las Guitarras group at club events and in Swedish public parks. After the end of the war he was able to take up a four-year painting course at an art school with a monthly Quaker grant. In 1951, the Stockholm City Museum bought its mural painting Tunnels Under the City . Frankl was a member of the International Association of Art - UNESCO and the Else-Lasker-Schüler-Gesellschaft .

At the art school he met Topsy (Gunnel Wahlström), who was studying graphics at the same art school. If he had previously dealt with the music of the Eastern Jews and international folklore , it was through them that he became acquainted with the Swedish songs. They performed together, and Hai & Topsy , as the duo now called themselves, began their tours with Swedish and international folklore, later mainly with Yiddish songs and songs by Carl Michael Bellman . At times both worked with the Swedish musicians Kjell Westling (clarinet, saxophone, horn and flute) and Björn Ståbi (fiddle).

From 1964 to 1966 they performed in Germany at the international Waldeck Festival at Waldeck Castle in the Hunsrück, together with Reinhard Mey , Dieter Süverkrüp , Hannes Wader , Hein and Oss Kröher , Franz Josef Degenhardt and Peter Rohland . In his youth Hai Frankl was in a group of the Nerother Wandervogel and there he met the writer Werner Helwig , with whom he had a lifelong friendship. Hai & Topsy later sang his songs and Helwig's Brecht scoring from the house postil . As collectors and editors of Yiddish music and with the corresponding recordings and publications, they have set a permanent monument to the lost world of Eastern Jewry.

Hai & Topsy were members of the Burg Waldeck working group and lived in Stocksund near Stockholm.
