Salcia Landmann (born November 18, 1911 as Salcia Passweg in Żółkiew , Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; † May 16, 2002 in St. Gallen , Switzerland ) was a Swiss writer , journalist and founding member of the Liechtenstein PEN Club .

Life

Salcia Landmann came from a Jewish family. She was the daughter of the couple Israel Passweg and Regina Passweg, née Gottesmann. In 1914 the family moved to St. Gallen, Switzerland. After attending a humanistic grammar school, Salcia Landmann first studied law and then philosophy with Nicolai Hartmann in Berlin . At the same time she learned the profession of fashion designer. After 1933 she continued her philosophy studies at the University of Basel with Herman Schmalenbach and finished it in 1939 at the University of Zurich with a dissertation on phenomenology and ontology . In 1939 she married the philosopher Michael Landmann ; In 1950 their son Valentin Landmann was born. In 1960 her first book was published, The Jewish Witz , which became a bestseller and standard work and was translated into various languages. In 1978 she founded the Liechtenstein P.EN Club with nineteen fellow writers . In the 1990s she published several articles in the state letters published by Hans-Dietrich Sander .

Landmann saw her work as a silent requiem on the lost Eastern Jewish culture . In 1979, in the foreword to Marxism and Sour Cherries , she described how the subject area expanded: "My next books dealt with the same subject area: Yiddish language and literature, Jewish race, Kosher cuisine." The turn to political issues resulted from her endeavor to make a contribution to the preservation of the Jewish cultural heritage: "By dealing intensively with the brutally destroyed world of the Eastern Jews, I was now sensitized to every kind of threat outside of the Jewish sphere."

For her, the book Marxism and Sour Cherries was an attempt "to illustrate this rationally elusive, possibly irreparable and irreversible tendency towards self-destruction in the free part of the West using examples from politics, education, higher education, art, religion, psychology, economics, literature and justice". .

criticism

Friedrich Torberg criticized Salcia Landmann's anthology The Jewish Joke and accused her of promoting anti-Semitic prejudice. Despite this criticism, the book became a bestseller and sold more than 800,000 copies in various editions and languages ​​(as of 1979).
