Valentin Landmann

Valentin Nikolai Josef Landmann (born June 7, 1950 in St. Gallen ) is a Swiss lawyer , book author and canton politician ( SVP ). He has been a member of the Zurich Cantonal Council since 2019 .

Life

Valentin Landmann grew up in St. Gallen's Rosenberg as the son of the Berlin-based philosopher Michael Landmann and the writer Salcia Landmann .

He completed his law studies in 1973 in just six semesters with the highest distinction. During his studies he was a member of the Swiss Zofinger Association . His dissertation in 1975 also received the grade “ summa cum laude ”. In 1977 he passed the bar exam in Zurich. He worked as a district attorney and substitute judge.

In 1979 he accepted a teaching position at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg. There he came into contact with the red light milieu, decided to change his life and tore up his habilitation thesis .

He has been working as a freelance lawyer in Zurich since 1984 . He is best known as a lawyer for the Hells Angels , prostitutes , neo-Nazis and other marginalized groups . In several publications he has dealt in particular with the economic mechanisms of the demimondial world and the background to crime . He is a lecturer in criminal defense at the University of Lucerne .

In December 1996, compatriot was due to multiple qualified money laundering to one year imprisonment conditionally sentenced a fine of CHF 15,000 and a professional ban of nine months. He was acquitted of the charge of financing the drug trade and of helping to promote favoritism and forgery of documents . His license to practice law was not revoked.

In 2012, Landmann took over the defense of lawyer and SVP cantonal councilor Hermann Lei in the Hildebrand affair .

Landmann is a member of the Liechtenstein PEN Club . He is married to a second marriage and has one grown daughter. He lives in Zurich and St. Gallen.

politics

During his student days, Landmann was a member of the Swiss People's Party (SVP), where he made it to the position of Vice-President of the City of Zurich Section. After graduating, he switched to the Free Democratic Party (FDP), where he was a member of the board of the Zurich city section. After a falling out with the party in the mid-1980s, he left the FDP again.

In September 2018 countryman was from the city of Zurich SVP County Party 7 / 8 nominated for the Cantonal elections in 2019 on the first list position. Landmann was elected to the Cantonal Council on March 24, 2019. His first candidacy for the National Council in the 2019 parliamentary elections failed.
