Peter Rohland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Rohland (born February 22, 1933 in Berlin , † April 5, 1966 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German singer, songwriter and folk song researcher .

life and work

Peter Rohland was in the Swabian boy shaft under the drive name pitter home. This group shaped him. In particular, she opened up the vast space of music to him. The cosmopolitan atmosphere of the youth and the large trips leading abroad allowed him to find contacts with strange sound forms. With a "self-discovery journey" he wanted to bridge the gap between high school and university, so hitchhiked he 1954 on Greece to the Middle East. Since then he has been collecting songs on his travels.

Rohland studied law in Tübingen from 1954 to 1956 and musicology at the Free University of Berlin from 1956 . Significantly influenced by the work of Wolfgang Steinitz , he researched the songs of the vagrants and the revolution of 1848 as well as Yiddish and foreign songs that he documented and performed as a folk song and chanson singer from 1956 on (among others with Wolfgang "Schobert" Schulz - later part of the duo Schobert and Black ). In 1960 he broke off his studies and decided to perform full-time as a freelance singer. At the same time he made a vocal training as a bass baritone .

Influenced by a record of Yiddish songs by Theodore Bikel , Rohland developed the Yiddish song program Der Rebbe singt , which premiered in 1963 with a small ensemble in the Diogenes Gallery in Berlin. It was well received by student and academic circles as well as Jewish communities living in Germany and was performed more than fifty times during the tour; The conclusion was a night performance in the Düsseldorfer Kom (m) ödchen . The song program was recorded for the youth radio in the broadcasting hall of the SDR . Still, no record company was willing to produce an LP; there were “apparently concerns about the authenticity of the songs”.

Rohland became known through his appearances at the Chanson Folklore International festival at Waldeck Castle in the Hunsrück (1964/1965), which he initiated together with Hein and Oss Kröher and friends. He had his first thoughts on this song festival as early as 1961; Together with Diethart Kerbs , the plans for New Year's Eve 1963/64 took shape and led to the first festival under the motto "Chanson Folklore International - Young Europeans Sing". Rohland was also a member of the festival management. In the spring of 1966 he drew up the plan for his own "studio for folk music and chanson" in the Schwabenhaus at Waldeck Castle.

At the age of only 33, he died of an acute brain hemorrhage in the Freiburg University Medical Center .

Other bards, from Walter Mossmann to Wolf Biermann , were inspired [by him] and, years later, ensured that the renaissance of chanson and folklore in German in the new movements from Wyhl to Wackersdorf , from Bonn to Mutlangen, created its identity unfolded. "

Peter Rohland Foundation

In 2006 the Peter Rohland Foundation was established to promote the song . Her main goals are the "processing and presentation of the artistic legacy of Peter Rohland for a wider public and the promotion of song, singing and making music" .

The Foundation organizes Peter Rohland exhibitions, which were presented for the first time at Whitsun 2007 at the International Song Festival at Waldeck Castle and have subsequently been shown in other locations throughout Germany, including in 2012 at the memorial for the freedom movements in German history in Rastatt Castle . Under the direction of the music editor Helmut König , a Peter Rohland song book is being published with the title “pitters Lieder” .

Further tasks include promoting the Waldeck as a place of song and song culture. Singing workshops for groups and group leaders take place on the premises of the Burg Waldeck Working Group , as well as special themed workshops (including “A cappella singing” and “Writing your own songs” ). Another project is the publication of a Waldeck songbook and the support of the WaldeckKultur-Scholarship, starting with a pilot project in cooperation with Christof Stählin .

Peter Rohland singing competition

The Peter Rohland Singewettstreit was named after Rohland as the singer and co-initiator of the earlier Burg Waldeck Festival . Only portable musical instruments without a power connection are permitted as accompanying instruments for the competition. It has been held annually at Burg Waldeck since 2000 in the categories of youth groups, individual singing, ensembles and singing groups. An additional special prize will be awarded for the best political song written by yourself. On the evening before, a cultural framework program will be offered, in which, among other things, group songwriters ( Werner Helwig 2002, Dietrich Hespers 2005, Erik Martin 2012) and the American folk scene (2003) and the music of the Sinti and Roma (2004) have been presented.
