Life

Hein and Oss Kröher (2011)

The shoe salesman and later teacher Oskar as well as the merchant Heinrich were rooted in the boyhood . In the post-war period, both played as guitarists in the Zweibrücken Jazz Orchestra, but soon they devoted themselves entirely to German folk songs in their free time . They published 17 long-playing records and CDs as well as books with collections of songs from all over the world. They received the silver medal at the 1978 World Book Art Exhibition in Tel Aviv for their songbook Das sind Unser Lieder , illustrated by Gertrude Degenhardt . Together with Peter Rohland , they initiated the Chanson Folklore International festival at Waldeck Castle (1964–69).

The brothers were also active as a writer . Heinrich Kröher wrote columns in the Pirmasenser newspaper under the pseudonym "Hoyna Tsiyäuna" ("Heiner Zigeuner") and documented the Pirmasenser dialect . Oskar Kröher published a book (The Orient is Far) about a motorcycle trip to India that he took with his friend Gustav Pfirrmann in 1951. For the twins' 80th birthday in autumn 2007, the first part of Oskar's autobiography Ein Liederleben was published , in 2011 the follow- up volume Auf irren Pfaden , in 2013 from the campfire into the limelight and in 2015 traveling singers .

When they performed on June 15, 2011 at the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz, the brothers announced that this would be their last public concert. After that, however, they performed again - on June 8, 2014 at the “International Song Festival” on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Burg Waldeck Festival .

Heinrich Kröher's eldest son is the non-fiction author and journalist Michael Kröher .

The folk singers

Hein and Oss Kröher (2007)

Heinrich and Oskar Kröher were on the stages in Europe and North America as "Hein & Oss" for more than fifty years. As German songwriters, they called themselves “Die Volkssänger” - after an expression from the Viennese Biedermeier period. Long before there was talk of a new folk song movement, the singing and guitar duo tried to produce democratic folk songs: workers songs , freedom songs from the time of the Hecker uprising of 1848/49, songs from the Hambach Festival , partisan songs and soldiers songs against the drill, sea shanties and cowboy songs, songs of hiking, drinking and restlessness. Your songbooks are style-defining.

The co-founders and regular participants of the “Chanson Folklore International” festival series at Waldeck Castle in the Hunsrück have traveled half the world for decades, including for the Goethe-Institut and the German Academic Exchange Service .
