Hajo Holborn
Hajo Holborn (born May 18, 1902 in Berlin , † June 20, 1969 in Bonn ) was a German-American modern historian .
Life
Holborn was the son of the physicist Ludwig Holborn . He attended the Kaiserin Augusta Gymnasium in Berlin-Charlottenburg (Abitur 1920) and studied history with Friedrich Meinecke at the University of Berlin and was awarded a doctorate in 1924 with a study on Germany and Turkey between 1878 and 1890. phil. PhD . In 1926 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on Ulrich von Hutten at the University of Heidelberg and taught there as a private lecturer. From 1931 he was a professor of history at the German University of Politics in Berlin. In 1933 he was dismissed for political reasons and because of his Jewish wife.
Holborn emigrated to the USA via Great Britain in 1934. In 1934 he became a visiting professor of German history at Yale University . From 1936 to 1942 he taught at Tufts University , Massachusetts . During the Second World War he was naturalized and worked for the Office of Strategic Services . From the end of the war until his death, he taught as a professor at Yale University. His main work was a three-volume history of Germany in modern times.
In 1941 Holborn was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
In 1955, Holborn was visiting professor at the University of Vienna . In 1967 he became the first president of the American Historical Association who was not born in the United States. Among his many well-known students are Otto Plant and Peter Gay .
His daughter, Hanna Holborn Gray , also a historian, was president of both Yale University and the University of Chicago .
