Hal C. Hillmann

Hal C. Hillmann , actually Hermann Christian Hillmann (born December 24, 1910 in Kiel ; died October 24, 1990 in Windermere ) was a German - British economist .

Life and activity

Hillmann initially received training as a carpenter . In 1931 he did his Abitur and then began studying economics at the University of Kiel , where Adolph Löwe and Gerhard Colm were among his teachers. During this time he worked at the Institute for World Economy and Shipping in Kiel on the compilation of the German university statistics. In 1932 he became Holm's assistant, at that time professor of economic political science.

After the National Socialists came to power in the spring of 1933, Hillmann was dismissed from university service in April 1933 due to his activity as chairman of the social democratic student organization in Kiel and shortly afterwards he was imprisoned: he was held in a re-education camp for four months. In 1934 he emigrated to Great Britain, where he completed his studies in 1935 at the University of St Andrews with a master's degree.

In the fall of 1935, Hillmann was hired as an economic investigator at the Dundee School of Economics . In 1936 he moved to the University of Manchester as a research assistant . In 1940 he was naturalized in Great Britain: In the same year he received a position on the planning staff of Arnold J. Toynbee at the University of Oxford . During the Second World War he worked in the German department of Chatham House , where he was involved in the analysis of the German war economy and later with the study of economic problems that would arise after peace. In 1945 he accompanied Toynbee to the Royal Institute of International Affairs .

In 1948 Hillmann got a job as a lecturer in economics at the University of Leeds , where he stayed until his retirement in 1976 - since 1956 with the rank of Senior Lecturer . In between he spent a year as a Research Fellow at Nuffield College .
