The Port of Halifax (Engl. Port of Halifax ) is next to the Port of Vancouver of the largest ports in North America . The Halifax Harbor is a natural harbor. The port is operated by the state-owned Halifax Port Authority . The port in the Canadian provincial capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax , is mainly used by cruise ships and cargo ships.

history

The natural harbor was used by the Royal Navy from 1758 to 1905 and then given to Canada. In 1912 ships and boats hurried from here to rescue the passengers of the sunken Titanic . 190 people were brought to Halifax and buried in Fairview Cemetery .

In 1917 the Mont Blanc , a French munitions ship, and the Imo , a Belgian ship flying the Norwegian flag, collided nearby . The Mont Blanc caught fire, which is why the ship loaded with explosives exploded shortly afterwards . 2,000 people were killed and another 9,000 injured in the explosion.

In 1928 a port of arrival for one million immigrants was opened. In 1955 the Andus L. MacDonald Bridge and Pier A1 were opened. In 1962 the Bedford Institute for Oceanography (BIO) was opened. In 1969/1970 the first International Container Terminal was opened in Halifax. The A. Murray MacKay Bridge was also opened. In 1981 the Fairview Cove Container Terminal opened and in 1982 the Maritime Museum of Atlantic . In 1986 the Fairview Cove Container Terminal was expanded . In 1995 the heads of government of the Group of Seven met for the G7 summit in Halifax . In 2000 the largest passenger ships docked in Halifax.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure in the Halifax Port Authority (HPA) area:

  • the South End Container Terminal , Piers 36-42 (operated by Halterm Limited )
  • the Ocean Terminals , Piers 23–34
  • the Seaport (also known as Seawall ), Piers 20–22, the Cruise Ship Pavilion and Pier 21 Museum , branch of NSCAD University , HPA administration building
  • Halifax Grain Elevator , leased and operated by Halifax Grain Elevator Limited
  • Richmond Terminals , Piers 9 and 9A
  • Richmond Offshore Terminals , Piers 9B-9D (storage / refinery for petroleum products)
  • Fairview Cove container terminal is, of Cerescorp operated

The following facilities are not owned by the Halifax Port Authority (HPA):

  • National Gypsum Shipyard (operated by the National Gypsum Company )
  • Woodside Atlantic shipyard (ship repairs and drilling platform repairs)
  • Imperial Oil - mineral oil warehouse (Imperial Oil supplies the Dartmouth refinery)
  • Autoport - Port for loading brand new vehicles to dealerships in North America by rail (operated by CN Rail ), rail links with Montreal , Toronto , Detroit and Chicago .

There is also the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Halifax , the main stationing base of the Atlantic fleet, Atlantic fleet , (also Maritime Forces Atlantic).

Cruise tourism

The port is usually approached by cruise ships from April to November of each year , which are operated by a total of 19 cruise companies, including AIDA Cruises , TUI Cruises , Carnival Cruise Lines , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean Cruises .
