The collar-Brachschwalbe ( Glareola nuchalis ) . Syn Galactochrysea liberiae; Galactochrysea emini , is a bird from the subfamily of curlew-like (Glareolidae).

It occurs in Ethiopia , Angola , Cameroon , Kenya , Mozambique , Namibia , Zambia , Sierra Leone , Zimbabwe , Sudan , Tanzania , Chad and Uganda .

The distribution area includes exposed rocks in larger rivers and flowing waters as breeding grounds, also sandbanks , rock islands in Lake Victoria and the Tana River .

description

The Collared Curlew is 18–19 cm tall and weighs 43–82 g. The top is dark brown to dark gray, the head and crown almost black with a wide white stripe under the eyes, which converges in the neck to a neck band in a V-shape. Like the legs, the base of the beak is light red, the tip of the beak black. The trunk, belly and underside of the tail are white. Dark wing covers become visible in flight. Young birds do not yet have the white ribbon and are uniformly yellow-brown.

The male's call is described as a quick sharp series of tern-like "kik-kik-kik" or softer "kip-kip".

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • G. n. Liberiae ( Schlegel , 1881) - Rufous-collared Pratincole - from Sierra Leone to western Cameroon
  • G. n. Nuchalis ( GR Gray , 1849), - White-collared Pratincole , nominate form - Chad, Sudan to western Ethiopia, Cameroon east to Uganda and the extreme west of Kenya, south to Tanzania, Angola and the Zambezi River in Zambia and Namibia , Zimbabwe and Mozambique

Way of life

The diet consists of flies including tsetse flies , ants , beetles and other insects , which are mostly captured on the fly . The bird is crepuscular and likes to hunt in groups.

The breeding season is between February and April in Sierra Leone, December and March in Ghana, April and June in Nigeria, July and October in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Danger

The collared curlew is considered not endangered ( Least Concern ).
