Scoundrel Postille

Die Halunkenpostille is a collection of poetry by the German writer Fritz Graßhoff , which was first published in 1947. It is one of the most successful poetry books of the post-war period ; numerous texts and ballads were set to music and recorded by well-known interpreters.

The author

Fritz Graßhoff (1913–1997) earned his living with popular texts ; best known is his evergreen Take me with captain on a journey , which he wrote for Hans Albers . However, he saw his calling as a painter, draftsman, translator and writer. His volumes of poetry met with little approval; He had greater success with his sometimes crude lyric texts and ballads, some of which were often sung as chansons and many of which are gathered in the editions of the scoundrel postil.

The book

The scoundrel postille contains more than 100 poems. Since they are rhymed throughout, they are ideal for setting songs. The topic is the people and needs of the lower classes , little anarchists , whom the author portrays critically with often surprising humor and great sympathy. Graßhoff himself grew up in a milieu - his father, first a seaman, later a coal merchant - in which pubs, drinkers, whores, thugs and scoundrels were commonplace. The book was a great success, the total circulation is now, surprisingly for a poetry book, over 200,000 copies. Graßhoff loved to give his books longer subtitles and sometimes changed them for new editions. Graßhoff can easily be called a descendant of Erich Kästner , Walter Mehring and Joachim Ringelnatz with his scoundrel postil texts .

Effects

Some texts were made for cabaret , and so it is not surprising that many great German chansonniers ( Hannelore Schroth , Hanne Wieder , Kirsten Heiberg and Inge Brandenburg ) performed recitations of his poetry and lied performances. Some composers also began to work on arrangements, such as B. Hans-Martin Majewski , Norbert Schultze and Alfons Nowacki . Graßhoff translated the epigrams of the Roman poet Martial

In a second "Scoundrel Postille", which Graßhoff published and to which he gave the title The Classical Scoundrel Postille , he published texts by some Greek and Roman poets of antiquity (e.g. Martial , Catullus and Philodemos ) on hardships and joys the man in the street and the follies of the rich.
